Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Select and prepare the articulator
   • Apply standard precautions when receiving, handling and working on dental materials
   • Decontaminate occlusal registration rims according to infection control guidelines
   • Confirm requirements of prescription
   • Select and adjust articulator in accordance with prescription
   • Ensure all adjustable settings of the articulator are set to their neutral or zero settings
   • Identify the mounting method to be used
2. Select and prepare materials
   • Position models and oral records in articulator for a range of prosthetic appliances
   • Prepare mounting materials and apply to models
   • Establish and secure centric records
   • Remove excess material and smooth to produce a neat finish
   • Clean equipment
3. Transfer oral records to articulator
   • Transpose records as provided
   • Record midline
   • Set and record vertical height
   • Set the condylar angles to the prescription given

Essential knowledge The candidate must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively do the task outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit manage the task and manage contingencies in the context of the identified work role This includes knowledge of Applied oral anatomy structures of the oral cavity hard and soft palate lateral and posterior borders of the oral cavity tongue and floor of the mouth teeth form and function dentition arrangement of the teeth naming and coding of teeth Articulation procedures Infection control guidelines for the decontamination of clinical material Mechanical devices articulators facebows Recording techniques and devices Relevant material science for carrying out procedures

Essential skills It is critical that the candidate demonstrate the ability to Consistently transfer all records Consistently mount models with attached registrations rims in accordance with requirements Consistently comply with current infection control guidelines Australian Standards and legislative requirements as they relate to the dental technicians specific job role Consistently comply with occupational health and safety policies and procedures as they relate to the dental technicians specific job role In addition the candidate must be able to effectively do the task outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit manage the task and manage contingencies in the context of the identified work role This includes the ability to Consistently follow safe work practices and apply standard precautions during the transfer of records and the articulation of models Consistently follow occupational health and safety policies and procedures Consistently read and interpret the prescription correctly Consistently follow sequenced written instructions and manufacturer specifications for the preparation of materials Critically evaluate all work produced so as to consistently meet both the technical requirements of the laboratory and client requirements Select procedures to prepare a range of custom trays Use literacy skills to read and follow directions policies and procedures including material safety data sheets laboratory policies and procedures
